Smart things: from smart meters to smart helmets

By 2020, according to the company J’son & Partners Consulting, about 34 billion devices with smart technologies and telematics capabilities will be connected to the Internet. This includes smart meters, smart home devices, and machine tools equipped with sensors. We present an overview of current smart devices.

Smart speakers

The market of smart home appliances, both abroad and in Russia, is experiencing a serious rise. Over the past few years, low-cost intelligent speakers, video cameras and various sensors with remote access and control, smart kettles, sockets and other devices of the era of the Internet of things have become available to the mass user.

In the west, the most popular device for controlling the smart home are the speakers with the support of artificial intelligence. According to Research and Markets, the global market for intelligent virtual assistants will grow until 2023 at an average annual rate of 32% and reach $ 9 billion in five years. The number of US households using voice-activated smart speakers will exceed 70 million by 2022 .

The most popular in the mass market of the United States and Great Britain are the smart speakers Amazon Echo Dot and the Google Home Mini, whose prices for stocks reach 30 pounds (about 2500 rubles). Both have a small size and similar functionality: playing music, communicating with voice assistant and controlling other devices connected to a multimedia system or a smart home (for example, a light or socket).

The Google column accepts voice commands using the intelligent Assistant, which can tell the weather forecast, read the to-do list from the calendar, etc. It is able to play music from the user’s directory or from streaming services like YouTube Music, as well as manage smart home devices integrated with Google Assistant.

Smart meters

In Russia, such a column in 2018 was released by Yandex, but so far such devices are far from mass popularity. In the near future, systems for automated resource counting and energy efficiency accounting will become much more popular. The key device here is smart meters to monitor the consumption of water and electricity.

Already, mobile phone operators offer packages for smart homes, within which it is possible to connect many devices within one account, within the framework of ordinary tariffs. The Moscow Government’s Department of Information Technology estimates that the proportion of capital residents using smart meters and other smart home devices will grow from 5% in 2017 to 30% in 2025.

A typical smart electric meter is a device with a sensor for transmitting data over a standard LPWAN network or via the Internet. On this counter installed battery, which is designed for uninterrupted operation for several years. The data automatically gets into the control center and is available to the user online on the website or in the mobile application of the management company.
